Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I had been meaning to read this one for a while. With the impending Netflix series, I figured it was time I did. And I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. Even more so with the realization that this was Morgan's first book. ALTERED CARBON pulls off the trick of bringing fresh perspective to some time honored SF ideas. Consciousness uploading. Virtual environments. Advanced A.I. All part of a noir, mystery story rendered with a cyberpunk aesthetic. Harrowing action sequences, brutal violence, and one particularly memorable sex scene keep the pages turning in this thriller set a few hundred years from now. I'm glad that two sequels exist, which I plan to read in the near future. It will be fun seeing what other insane scenarios Takeshi Kovacs can get himself into and (hopefully) out of.
